Why Clean the Carpet?
Carpets, rugs and upholstery are the largest sources of fabric in the home.
Walking across carpets results in vibrations that cause small allergenic particles to become airborne.
50% of all illnesses are caused or aggravated by polluted indoor air, often originating in the carpet or upholstery.
The levels of some hazardous pollutants in indoor air are up to 70 times greater than outdoor air.
Studies in North America have shown that air quality in 19 out of 20 homes is considerably more polluted than air outside.
Children are more likely than adults to be affected by polluted indoor air.

Seven Steps to help reduce bugs, mites and allergens:
- Use pillow and mattress covers and launder them regularly.
- Wash bed linen in over 55C hot water to kill the mites and remove their allergens.
- Remove and launder fitted sheets, as they are a popular breeding ground for bugs and mites.
- Replace soft furnishings such as curtains, soft toys and sheepskins.
- Regularly put your rugs and other soft furnishings out in the sun.
- Improve ventilation to reduce humidity and open doors and windows to circulate air.
- Vacuum carpets and upholstery weekly to keep allergens at bay.
These simple steps can reduce the household dust mites in carpets and upholstery that can trigger asthma and hay fever.
A study by researchers from the University of Washington and Harvard University in the United States evaluated practical methods to reduce mites in urban homes.
Pillows and mattresses were encased in allergen-resistant covers, bedding was washed weekly in hot water and carpets and upholstery were steam-cleaned and/or vacuumed.
The researchers found all the measures were effective in reducing problems in the homes. Carpet steam cleaning produced particularly good results, according to researcher Dr. Darryl Zeldin.
The levels of dust mites in carpet and upholstery that had been steam-cleaned and vacuumed stayed low for up to 8 weeks after the treatment, compared to 4 weeks for vacuuming alone. Zeldin said: "We believe that the hot carpet steam cleaning kills the allergens and vacuuming removes them from the carpet."
The U.S. research was published 2 days after Australian doctors announced that childhood asthma rates were the highest in the world.
More than 1 in 4 Canadian children now have asthma symptoms, according to a recent article published in a well-known Medical Journal. An estimated 10% of Canadian adults also have asthma.
Household allergies are a major factor known to increase the frequency and severity of asthma. Mites live off human skin scales and thrive in warm humid environments. The protein found in their droppings is what causes an allergic response in humans. These droppings continue to cause allergic symptoms even after the mite has died.
